An abortion survivor described her ordeal to me
she was meant to die in 1977
the doctor who took a Hippocratic oath to save lives
was ready to butcher her
with the sincerity of Dr. Mengele
She was meant to be murdered at 7 mo. in utereo
saline was injected into the jail cell called
her mother’s womb
she was no mother
some reptiles eat their offspring
her transparent skin should have been seared
but God spared her that agony
she should have been born scalded, blind
and dead.
God sent an angel to deliver her from
the hell of her birth, and the demons
that had surrounded her
an abortion survivor
are there such people walking the earth?
witnesses to their silent genocide
we said, “No more”, when Auschwitz
was discovered full of bones,
we vowed, “No more systematic deaths”
we as a world closed our hands over other hands
and we cried as a collective,
“No more Pol Pots!”
“No more Hitlers!”
No more Idi Amins!”
No more Stalins!”
we lied.
when our fetuses are thrown out with
the garbage
once filled with the brilliance of life,
once filled with divine potential
when parents closed their hearts to their
children
we mercifully slammed shut their
beautiful eyes, with apathy
and hardest of hearts,
we ruthlessly abandoned their
miniature bloody hearts on the cement
floors of dirty clinics
What was their crime?
greedy doctors
selfish mothers
absent fathers
apathetic bystanders
It is our humanity that is really on trial
Who says we have advanced?
Who says we are civilized?
Who says we are even humane?
When the smallest among us are destroyed
for gain
medieval world, we have not grown
upholding laws that murder
who says the dark ages have slipped
with the passage of so many centuries?
when torture still exists
we dare defend terrorists at
Gitmo?
when we methodically torture the most
innocent Americans.
who says the stake of crucifixion
has died?
abortion a word as vile as rape,
an act as insidious as genocide,
a right as twisted and perverted
as slavery.
Had we really wept with the incinerated bodies
of the Jews?
Were we really outraged when black men were
shackled, when they were brandished with a
plantation owner’s poker, and black women
were forcibly raped?
Do we not feel compassion for victims of earthquakes
and floods, and would we not turn over every last
brick until we find all of its survivors
under rubble
under debris
under the guilt of our wealth?
then I don’t comprehend
the senseless slaughterings
of the unborn
for not being wanted?
when women can arbitrarily decide
who lives and who dies
when they can declare in open rebellion
to God
“I refuse to carry what you have created
by design,
by purpose
by divine love.”
when they shamelessly destroy the grace
of God, and withhold His mercy
when societies applaud and send themselves
gifts to one another, as if they have done
a good deed,
when saving cats and dogs is the full extent
of their useless and vapid compassion
when death is the real face of a nation
when child sacrifice is the real heart of
a people
then what is left but judgment?
