Lord, Remember the dust that poured down as rain?
BE OUR REFUGE
On this day forevermore
We were targets,
and our hearts
open wounds
we took our lives for granted
how could we know?
Americans sipped on diet coke and pepsi
for so long
concerned about cola wars,
strapped into the seats of SUVS
running marathons
dipped in the balm of a grace
we didn’t understand then
How we took our lives for granted
everytime we hung up the telephone,
“Good-bye we’ll talk tomorrow”
little realizing tomorrow was
really yesterday,
and a permanent good-bye,
we lifted up our wings,
we were proud,
“But Lord, did we deserve this?”
the ashes haunted us for years
our souls in grey soot
Is there a way to free our flesh
from this grief that stains
so deep?
Lord, with a cry as loud as a trumpet
as loud as my voice will allow
“Father, Help us to see Your Face
Help the families, this nation, this world
to see The Purpose of a tragedy so heinous
ABBA, Embrace every whisper lifted in Your Name
even the faintest,
as You heard the faintest cries,
that day,
Do not Forsake us!
praying on the edge of mortality
a vapor
a flower fading
a light that flickers
then exinguishes
a rose surrounded by thorns
we became lost in the theories
of conspiracy,
of villians,
and murderors,
of war,
of terrorists,
a bitterness choked
a nation grieved
our countrymen
buried underneath rubble
no bodies to bury
a massive grave
of twisted metal and steel
searching for answers
Lord, we searched our souls
we tore into our bibles
for comfort
now,
10 years later
the images of planes
exploding
seared into our blood
of crashing and falling buildings
we Lift our eyes ABBA
thousands of names etched
into stone
carved into our history
Lord, did we learn
not to take living for granted
the breath that cost You
so much
the breath that is free
as men die overseas in worlds
we cannot fathom
This buying and selling we do
and marrying and drinking
do we know that there will come
a reckoning
that all accounts must be settled
as those who crashed into dust
at Ground Zero
